When you see a zombie movie, what do you expect to see? High octane terror? Horrible violence and dismemberment? The awareness that we are the greatest monsters in a world full of brain eaters? It is such an expected formula that we have now seen in all directions that the genre can go, for good or for the worst. I have the impression that we have become completely desensitized or voluntarily ignorant to what is overview in these films, from the underlying rage of domestic life to the buzzing of consumption. But sometimes a zombie film is just a zombie film, made for thrills and nothing else. 28 years later is not that. In fact, it’s so much more. Since I saw this first trailer which obtained a reference to entertain a British war poem on it, I knew that we were for something special. Perhaps not the special “best of the year”, but shit is perhaps the case.
Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland returned to a world of rage and terror, and I’m not just talking about the world in the film. In this post-Covid era, where isolation, mistrust and hanging on the past are tearing us away, there is a ton of horror to find that does not exactly imply corpses filled with rage. Okay, there are also many in the real world, we will not stop electing them. But 28 years later Look at the fall of society is so visceral and poignant while finding room for real compassion, which makes him feel so cathartic at the time we live. It goes well above his publishing style, a choice that can frighten some people, but real Boyle The heads know what cooks. However, through mania and violence is a soothing reflection on the acceptance of death and the destruction of innocence which, honest towards God, almost made me cry. I do not remember the last time I was so subverted in such a positive way. I have certainly not forgotten what Boyle, Garland and Company are capable, but sometimes I forget what horror is really capable, and my boy, I like to be recalled.
28 years after a virus that sends humans to a violent and animal rage swept the United Kingdom and closed it from the rest of the world, small colonies of people are trying to rebuild their own societies. This is where we meet Spike, a young boy pushed to the shocking and flawless age while his sick and forgetful mother wasted in bed. When Spike hears the word of a living doctor on the continent, he goes against his father’s will and takes his mother to see him, braving the terrifying world of monsters that are just beyond the walls of his colony.
The first piece of the film explains how you expect it; Spike is taken to the continent by his father to hunt infected in order to harden him. It is a tense sequence of events trained not really by survival, but rather its illusion. They do not put themselves in danger to hunt, feed or enlighten. They are there to kill, and that’s it. This kind of creation of what the little world of the colony embodies. Of course, it is a learning experience for Spike, but that is probably more to rely on his paranoia rather than really supporting his community. This section of the film maintains the kind of chaos and brutality that I expected from the film, while Also Giving us an overview of the talents of Young Alfie Williams. This is his first major role in what I can say, and he really does a phenomenal job. Spike is one of those characters that I know People will complain because he makes a lot of bad decisions. You know, like most children. Of course, bringing her sick and forgetful mother to the land of zombies is not A good idea, but his actions reflect a greater image. The whole film first looks like a fight against death, but really, it is a fight for life, which, yes, are two different things. His father, played very well by Aaron Taylor-Johnsonis ready to abandon his wife, because to tell the truth, fight the crazy hordes is a lot Easier than fighting for the health of his wife. It is something out of control, but its reluctance to give hope a chance is ultimately what makes their village climb. In addition, Jodie Comer Isla, the sick mother of Spike, can sometimes be quite heartbreaking. She slowly loses the agency on her memories, often confusing Spike for her own father, which also reflects the position of guardian and protector in which Spike finds himself. All around, super solid character work.

As the film continues, there is a very notable change in the atmosphere, as if by chance, the land of less civilization brings out much more from humanity. It is also when we can see a little more humor bleeding through melancholy, showing that even a little happiness can be brought in darkness. Whether of a single Swedish soldier who reminds us that the rest of the world continued to develop outside Great Britain, or simply to see an Alpha-Zombie permanently Suspended, there is a surprising amount of laughter to make alongside horror. But the film soon becomes more meditative and a plot More real, attacking things that we cannot control like death. This brings us to the introduction of Ralph Fiennes Character, Dr. Kelson, which I will not talk about too much to avoid spoilers. But I will just say that he is the best character of everything. This last part of the film is really much more tender and moving than everything I expected from a rabid zombie film, but I think it gives this film so much heart.
And although this film has a lot of granularity and visceral intensity, Jesus, is it magnificent. A large part of this thing has been shot with an iPhone 15, and of course, there are platforms and stuff increasing the quality but still, how Does that seem better than the films shot with cameras that cost a zombie arm and a zombie Dong? From a terrifying dash through the backdrop of the ocean by an astonishing nebula at the haunting and ethereal night surrounded by a bone temple, this thing is constantly magnificent. Filming with small iPhones apparently gave the crew more freedom to cross the environment in which they were shooting, anchoring the film further and that everything feels massive in the process. The world building is disturbing stellar, mature with so much potential which will undoubtedly be harvested in future films. But don’t get me wrong, this whole film is not exactly the kind of Fartsy artistic horror film that you may think.

Like the original film, an aggressive editing style is used throughout the film, often in places, it is logical but also areas where it does not. Rapid cuts, spectacular close -ups and repetitive frames work together to give many scenes an intensity of cardiac pumping threatening to put you in cardiac arrest. There are also a lot of daring choices, such as the use of 20 iPhone cameras to pull a kind of rotary ball time each time infected is plugged in by an arrow. It is certainly not a clean cut film, and the abrasive style might not be for everyone. Hell, it took me a minute to get used to it, but once I did it, I was struck down. The crazy edition is also accompanied by an equally crazy score, composed by young Scottish Fathers Hip Hop Ground. In one way or another, these guys were able to create a score not only aggressively disoriented and opposite, but also strangely magnificent. It seems incredibly unique and gives this film an identity that you will not find in any other horror film today.
As a horror film, however, it may not be entirely delivered in the way the public is waiting for. Do not get me wrong, there are a lot of big, naked, screaming, infected to go around, but the film is not to focus much more on human drama rather than on the threat of monsters. It is in a way the same complaint that I have for many Godzilla and Kong Modern films, but this time, the human element is actually GOOD. It is really the Godzilla: minus one Like modern zombie, and of course, it is certainly not the first of its kind. But it was this unique voice that leads the film that made me go 28 days later. There are still moments of thorns uprooted by the style of the head under zero and intense prosecution through the woods to keep the heart to pump, but it is certainly not the notation of the story, but rather a support player. This is certainly not what I expected, and it can turn you off to see it, but I implore you to go with an open mind and soaked expectations.

28 years later manages to be both an energy drink injected directly into your blood circulation and a deeply moving reflection on death and war to recover the past without looking towards the future. It is incredibly shot and edited by frantically to create a film that borders the tonal boost, but always finds a way to reintegrate and regain your composure. This is a film that I look forward to seeing again, because it asks for a return to a return to fully appreciate the profession that went there. 2025 is really cement as a year of grade horror films A after that and SinnersAnd I hope the train will continue to run with films like Weapons, together, himAnd Clown in a cornfield. The latter has already come out, but my personal fears have prevented me from looking at it for the moment. I can’t stand corn fields.
Notation

Memento Mori

Memento Mori is Latin to “recall death” (vaguely). And nothing helps jog the old memory, or brings thoughts of the next life, just like a big drink. This thin and imposing cocktail is supposed to reflect the bone temple later seen in the film, surmounted by a multitude of skulls. The concept of death is such a soft part of life, and this is reflected in this drink thanks to a mixture of aperol, pomegranate juice and blackcurrant. And for your crown skull, I went with a white chocolate ball to give you a nice snack while you sip. But remember the reverse of this sentence, Memento Amori: Remember to love. So like yourself and don’t go too far with them if you can help him.
