“Butterfly” of the Video Prime Flutters, sometimes Bafoues | TV / Streaming

Boom -based! The graphic novels of the studios of Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett (illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone), “Butterfly” of Prime Video sees Daniel Dae Kim taking secret operations, the father Dynamics of his daughter and the father and the betrayal inspired by K-Drama. But first we can watch him flex his karaoke muscles on “Mr. Brightscid “of the Killers, a song that proves that he is not afraid to crush your group. Here is the Intel: The Seoul division of a Dark Ops company called CADDIS Private Intelligence is on a mission, and their motivations are nothing good. While businessmen engage in alcohol and noraebang (Karaoke of Korean private room), an intelligent assassin begins his work. It is Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), and she is looking for DDK at DDK when the series opens, “I think I found it.” He is personal because she is his daughter.

At the beginning, the series combines the RPMs and the sense of humor of a South Korean spy thriller with sensations of American cat and mice, all underlined by a world K-POP / pop soundtrack (Hi, Abba). I want him to keep this energy.

David has a shot to find Rebecca and convince her to leave Caddis or risk reprisals, but a blow is not enough. He hasn’t seen his daughter for nine years, and he cannot go away, making “Butterfly” a show on parents and their adult children in a complicated and clandestine game. The first pair is David and Rebecca, the second is Juno (Piper Perabo) and his son Oliver (Louis Landau). Ironically, it is not David that one or the other kid wants to please; It’s Juno. Perabo has a story with espionage entertainment, going back to his life as an “Affairs Cachet”. This new series has a similar style and looks a bit like the shows of this USA Network era, but I want him to have the level of charm as something like “Burn opinion” or K-Drame goodness that it reaches, like “K2” or a “man to man”.

Naelel is not

Interestingly, most episodes are named after the cities of South Korea: Daegu, Busan and Pohang. However, the first is simply called “pilot”, and the last episode is entitled “Annyeong”, a term that can mean “Hi” or “Bye” depending on the context. At the height of this title, “Butterfly” makes us wait for the last second to see if it is a start, an end or something between the two. In the meantime, Rebecca has unresolved feelings at the origin of 14 years, and she is not sure that she cares about David’s reasons. Spiral emotions often lead to bad decisions, and we know what it means for a story like this. Things are about to become very ugly, very quickly.

While David and Rebecca have vibrations of friends, they also return the paradigm “Solitaire wolf and Cub”, a trope as reliable as “enemies to lovers” – he rarely fails. As friends, David is reserved and measured, while Rebecca is wild and reckless. However, because they are father and daughter, his nature as a solitary wolf balances and protects it. Here is where he turns: Rebecca is an older bear who has objectives outside of those who set themselves by the elder wolf. She is also able to exploit and solve problems without him. So, rather than a mandalorian and a growl, or a Leon and Matilda (“The Professional”) in pivotal scenes, we get a Batman and Robin that look more like Batman and Nightwing.

Their dynamic duo roles and their sincere moments together are magnetic. Like when the two drink “artisanal” makgeolli set instead of soju—Teying in the new life that David built for himself and hopes to share with Rebecca. In other words, if they can get out of this mess. Or when she jumps to defend him in a fight at the Daegu massive station in Busan. When he explores tenderness or explodes in large pieces of action, it is at this moment that “butterfly” goes out. And yet, there is an unequal chemistry between our two prospects which does not catalyze quite, and when you rethink the dynamics of lone wolf and Cub, you need ignition and climbing. D

Despite these summits between the father and the daughter – a opposite for the mother and the son, Juno and Oliver – I was not fully committed while looking. If I seem to go back and forth on it, you caught me. Throughout the six episodes race, I continued to wonder if this series works or not. I’m still not sure. However, by punching on the South Korean and American cultural signals, with the legacy of Korean crafts, juxtaposed against the current world, the “butterfly” takes more depth. The titles of the cities of the episodes are not only essential places, but a signal that the series wants to take the public somewhere.

Reina Hardesty

For fans of K-Drama, Kim Tae Hee (“My Princess”, “Iris”, “Hi bye, Mama”) presents herself as David’s wife, Eunju, and there are hot kisses. Sung Dong Il (“Hospital Playlist”) is here as Doo Tae, his father, but if that was not enough, the whole family is a list of stars, including Mom (lee he hwa of “My Love from Another Star”) and Little Brother (Sung Joon of “Madame Antoine”). On the sinister side, Kim Jihun, our beloved emperor of “The Hautned Place”, is now a ruthless murder who makes Kakis consumption feel like a death threat – because it is. His name is Gun, and although this name is too much on the nose, it is not a lie. This actor is disarming, capable of moving from the adorable to a bad boy to vicious undoubtedly on the veracity of his characters. And these are just a few faces you will recognize, including Park Hae-Soo of “Squid Game”.

In the second half of the six episodes season, tensions are increasing as we meet the extended family and the accent put on the underground world in which we play in sharpening. The former CIA agent, Senator Dawson (Charles Parnell), has a more important role to play in the detangling of multiple plots; Big Apparatus – My nickname for David’s stepfather – is a much larger player than we made, and Rebecca becomes the ball in play, beating back and forth between Juno and David.

Despite the mixture of several tropes, genres and sub-genres that I like, including k-drama, spy thief, intrigue, great action and women with fully achieved characters-“Butterfly” does not quite take fire. Chemistry is not there, even if the actors are strong. Although the writing is mainly solid, it does not have this special sauce that I seek in a series of action or thriller – this hook which makes me cross the story, whether for the trip, to see how it ends, or the need to understand the characters; Sometimes because the action is just so good. “Butterfly” does not give off the crackling of the tension which forces us to continue to look. Although you can find me look at him with a white night or a lazy Sunday. In the end, “Butterfly” looks good and keeps moving, but that is not that my heart beats. Again, look at your step; This end is deadly.

Whole series projected for examination. First on August 13 on Prime Video.
