“Only murders in the building” attacks the evolution of the world by remaining the same | TV / Streaming

The murder at Arconia has become as seasonal as changing leaves and pumpkin spices, annual comforting food while children return to school and temperatures fall. The undeniably talented chamber of writers on this Hulu success includes the mission, rarely deviating a lot of a proven formula of guest stars of great power and twisted mysteries. Since the successful launch of this intelligent humor and culture of old -fashioned podcast and culture in 2021, celebrities have lined up to appear alongside the nominees Emmy Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Whether it is murderer, victim or suspect, everyone wants to be “only murders in the building” for a reason: it is fun. It is an intelligent show supported by the ridiculous timing of its legendary tracks, two men who can sing almost all punchlines.

If you are from the camp that “Omitb” has exhausted its welcome, the fifth season will not dissuade you from this position. In fact, this is the first time that I felt like it may be time to resolve the last case. However, this feeling of something that pushes creation is sufficiently exceeded by the pure joy of spending time with Martin, short and Gomez. Call that simple. It is this time of year.

The fifth season opens with the trio, once again, at the carefully built crossroads. Oliver (Martin Short) has the most upheaval, planning to move with his wife, Loretta (Meryl Streep), perhaps even elsewhere than the Arch. Mabel (Selena Gomez) no longer lives there but is sufficient to give the impression that she does it, even if she wonders if her favorite place moves on. Charles (Steve Martin) is looking for something to trigger his latest chapter, even joining meetings to find a new partner.

In this chaos, drop the mystery of the murder that ended last season, when the Lester Lester Lester (Teddy Coluca) holder ended up being bloody in the court fountain. The double winner of the Oscars clearly does a little riff on Mr. Musk, playing a guru of foreign technology which can spy on all aspects of your life. The social commentary of the season goes through strong and strong in these characters who like and mastered, as well as an arc involving Lester being replaced by a robot named Lestr.

Like many themes during the five seasons, the technological aspect of this year seems a little superficial, but it is interesting to consider the most in the context of two actors who have been working together for more than four decades. As they make jokes that could be called “dad” in a context of technological surveillance and speaking robots, the best rhythms of the season get a meta. At a time from AI, will we even have actors like Martin Short and Steve Martin?

Unfortunately, as last season, this year is quickly overcrowded. I only mentioned half of the guest stars. The Beanie Feldstein is not credible as an old friend of Mabel, who is now a world -renowned pop star, a character who only exists to trigger the lack of self -confidence of Mabel. (I would say that it is one of the best seasons in Gomez, his timing sharper than ever. Da’vine Joy Randolph is also an unlikely MVP candidate.) Keegan-Michael Key is still great, but underused in the episodes sent in press. Ditto Jermaine Fowler as a new goalkeeper, forced to compete with a robot for his work. Finally, there is the wonderful Dianne Wiest as a widow of Lester, also expelled by the crowd until the half of the season. But there is something magic to look at the widening legends wiest and streep bounce.

All these people are great comic artists, and the truth is that this is often enough with “only murders in the building”. Again, it is a comforting food, something that goes easily through a mixture of dizzying plot – there is a new turn with each episode – and a remarkable Starpower. Could it be better? Of course. But sometimes, quite well will do the trick.
