“Eyes of Wakanda” spies cannot be stopped in a new Disney + Disney animated series | TV / Streaming

Looking at the “Arcana” and anime fandoms, Disney + “Eyes of Wakanda” is all about the spies that keep the secrets that Wakanda does not want the world to know. The new limited series of Marvel Animation, taking place in the world of “Black Panther”, begins in 1260 BC. The city is immediately multicultural – accents to varied clothes and tones of skin. But, by navigating off the coast, we see ships crossing the mist with figures of the golden lion like their arcs. It is the kingdom of the lion. What spell is waiting for the city?

“When you have suffered, as you have done, benevolence can look like a servitude.”

These words are difficult to believe when the speaker branches a brand iron in episode 1, “Into the lion’s den”. This is perhaps the setting or that someone says: “Blood and sand”, but this version of Crete reminds me of Rome in the “Spartacus” series of Starz, especially the first season. There is a feeling of ancient dangers and captivity, warriors and machinations, but here there are pirates. However, there is a face that stands out. She is tall and vigilant but seems afraid. It is the cover of a spy. Soon we are brought back, six weeks earlier, to Wakanda.

Nkati (Cress Williams), a senior official and a former captain of the King’s guard – a warrior just behind the king – has disappeared. Dozens of dangerous articles imbued with Wakandane technology have disappeared with him. So it’s not good. Need a renegat to hunt a renegat, Dora Milaje’s chief, Akeya (Patricia Belcher), calls an expelled warrior who defies authority. This warrior is this face in the crowd in Crete: Noni (expressed by model and Winnie Harlow beauty, of the merchant tribe.

“The secret has always been essential to Wakanda’s safety.”

Consequently, Noni must be a ghost, but the power exerted by Nkati the lion is vast and advanced. Can a ghost tackle a self-proclaimed half-god? The Nkati pirate fleet builds ports by launching a single switch, and its mother vessel is a floating fortress. This is where you might suspect that the creatives behind “Eyes of Wakanda” are fans of the Hit Smash “One Piece”. He is in the conceptions of daring characters, the greatness of ships and the fight against imperialist control. The lion is so predatory that he builds a enslaved harem, lots of women who learn the arts and have said that they only have to smile.

Very early on, the use of propaganda to wash the brain of the captives of pride is so well integrated, I sealed a front and I wondered aloud: Who wrote this? It was Geoffrey Thorne. These characters are able to use psychological tactics and violence to “re -educate” and force others in their worship of the conquerors. If the action animation is your thing, you will be ready for what it comes into play here. Surprisingly, this hook only occurs 14 minutes in history, but the appeal of the series is contained in the line, “Wakanda is a kingdom of many secrets”.

To keep these secrets, the hidden nation deploys a network of spies. Once known as Hatut Zerraze, they are now called War Dogs – a role you will remember of Nakia (Lupita Yongo) in “Black Panther”. Roomed by a partnership between Marvel Animation and Ryan and Zinzi Coogler’s Proximity Media, and led by executive director Todd Harris, “Eyes of Wakanda” is not for children. Not young people anyway. I mentioned both “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” and “Arcane” because this spectacle does not move away from blood, politics or the way of war by frontal aggression or subterfuge. Another central theme examines the effects of the “outside world” on war dogs and how these effects change them. Although their methods are sometimes questionable, the goal is always to serve Wakanda and protect the world. By achieving these objectives, “Wakanda’s eyes” align the repatriation of artifacts with “mission: impossible”, incorporating all sensations and thrills.

As the episodes take place, we meet heroes and bad guys from Greek mythology, then we travel from the Mediterranean to the east to discover the origins of another Marvel legend, and finally in Ethiopia and behind. Wherever we go, if there is an artifact Wakandan to recover, war dogs are there. In the second episode, “Legends and Lies”, we meet Memnon / B’kai (Larry Heron) – Yes, this one – while he fights alongside Achilles (Adam Gold) in the Trojan War. Then, jumping forward in time, in the third episode, “Lost and Found”, we visit China in 1400 AD for pleasure and clandestine games with the frightening basha (Jacques Colimon), the captain by book Ebo (Isaac Robinson – Smith), and a version of Iron Fist (Jona Xiao). In episode 4, “The Last Panther”, we go to the city of Adwa in 1896, where Prince Tafari (Zeke Alton) and Kuda (Steve Toussaint) disagree in their prospects and methodologies during the First War of Italy and Ethiopia.

In this final arc of the series limited to 4 episodes, science fiction deepens, taking us into unexpected places and events. Imagine a crossing of “The Matrix” and the video game “Helldivers 2” but with a known Marvel threat and Anika Noni Rose. This is where we realize that stories in “Eyes of Wakanda” are interconnected through more than the missions that war dogs undertake, ultimately connecting the series to live films and at a favorite moment of fans. Friends, when the intrigue thickens, it’s so satisfactory to see these creatives cooking.

“It is the nature of a war dog to follow their own path.”

If you are a fan of action animation, spy crafts and alternative history, it is very pleasant to see Wakanda placed in the context of historical influence and a Marvel universe that borders ours, such an advanced technology that it is indistinguishable from magic, skills of spirit and combat, and internal duals between loyalty and duty. It is a world of consequences, where leading black characters are made in fullness – sometimes morally gray but who are always willing to fight against friends and enemies for what they believe and the land they call at home. It makes soldiers of war dogs, but whether they are heroes or not, it is a question of perspective. Going through decades with each episode, “Eyes of Wakanda” counts the cost of the “price they pay”.

Animated in lushly 3D by axis animation studios, with an opening sequence drawn by hand of the AKA studios which presents silhouettes sketched in charcoal like ink, the visuals invite us to explore. Ryan Meinerding is the head of visual development and the conception of the characters, and according to VarietyThe exaggerated proportions of the characters are inspired by the great American painter, Ernie Barnes. With more visual style clues of artists like Dean Cornwell. (There could be a little tribute to Klimt in the first episode too.)

The elasticity and three-dimensional forms combined with pictorial effects are poetry, improved by the construction of the world and the conception of characters who find themselves soldiers of science fiction, history and various global cultures. The resulting animation is kinetics, with a heartbeat, evoking the style of the anime and Dongua Like “to be hero x” – equally enchanting combat scenes that take place in the field of imagination and effective impressive. The visuals are rooted in the Wakandse tradition. For example, vibranium artefacts emit a gentle purple light reminiscent of heart -shaped grass. Facial expressions and body language are made in a lively way, so we understand what is happening below the surface of each character. In the third episode, there is a scene where Basha is injured, and the strata of emotion are exposed so that we can see.

My only major complaint is the number of thin episodes. However, after “sinners” and “Kpop Demon Hunters”, I did not expect another fantastic fantastic fueled by adjacent cultures and myths but distinct from the dominant American current. This series may not be completely struck the heights of these two properties, but it does a good job by playing in the shadow of Wakanda and the MCU. With its imaginative machinations and its beautifully vertiginous action, the Marvel animation and the local media hold the wider promise of Wakanda. Long before the end of the “Wakanda eyes”, you will be prepared and ready for the next mission.

The four episodes projected for examination. Now on Disney +.
