The new Hulu series “Chad Powers” combines the film “Athlete Over-the-Hill is making a comeback” and the film “Person has prosthetic makeup to pretend to be someone else”. It is not a combination that has been tempted before, to my knowledge, and when you even watch an episode, you will understand why.
Glen Powell, who also produced the series, plays Russ Holliday, a gifted college quarter whose career ends after having made a small but catastrophic error that makes his team lose the Rose Bowl. Well, this is not the only reason it ends. It ends because Russ is an arrogant fool, often bellicose, and after his mistake, he behaves abominably on national television.
Nobody anywhere in football will engage Russ after that, so he ends up living with his father Mike (Toby Huss), a Hollywood makeup artist who, we are told, “makes the new film Davy Crockett for Michael Bay”. He denies why his life is a mess and seems to spend a lot of time partying. We also learn that he tried to reinvent himself by appearing as a guest on “The Masked Singer” and by getting involved in the crypto. Another pleasant character than Russ is less popular than Osama bin Laden. When people recognize Russ in public, they look away and claim that they do not know who he is. He hates himself so much that he uses one of his trophies to open a bottle of beer, but not so much that he is ready to recognize and name the real source of his misfortune, this beautiful guy in the mirror.
Then, Russ hears that the catfish in difficulty (and nonexistent) from southern Georgia is trying to reverse their trajectory down by holding open trials for a new quarter. Russ and his new boyfriend Danny, the team mascot, use prosthetic makeup effects to create a new non -existing person, Chad Powers, to adapt and try. One of the many Jokes Showbiz of this series is that Powell, who has often been compared to his compatriot Texan Matthew McConaughey, looks a bit like the character of McConaughey Wooderson in “Dazed and Confused” when he is in his Powers Chad, and sounds like Wooderson on helium.
Of course, Chad, being Russ, demonstrates extraordinary skills and is appointed quarter of the team. This is later demoted to save the quarter-back, because the young pious and pious young man who had previously held this position, Gerry Dougan (Colton Ryan), is a known quantity, and the head coach Jake Hudson (Steve Zahn) wants to see how the Chad does in a real game.
The following is an impossible account in which the characters participating in a deception adapt to new problems to maintain the cunning. Danny and Russ must constantly redo and refine the makeup of the powers of the Chad so that it remains when it is warmer than the flames and everyone sweat, when the new guy is overturned on the ground, or when he should take the shower or a swimming pool like everyone else in the team. They must also find a way to meet the request for access to the press without offering verifiable facts. Russ’s original inspiration for Chad was “Mrs. Doubtfire”, and like the adorable English nanny of Robin Williams, Chad is vague and a little surreal by answering questions about his past, saying cryptic things like: “I grew up from the grid, where the crawdads are.”
In the great tradition of the tropes of sporting films, there is also an assistant coach who has great ideas but who is not listened to because of a weak position in the hierarchical order, and a girl of the coach who clicks with the new guy, who is struck by her and gives her emotional support that she cannot obtain from anyone else. The latter types are combined in the form of Ricky Hudson (Perry Matfield), a large and beautiful ex-track of track that embarked on the mercy of his father after the end of his career prematurely. It is not the only parallel between the personal stories of Russ and Ricky; The most obvious is that they both want the unconditional love of their fathers, who are decent but non-non-demonrative people. (When Russ calls Mike after having disappeared for six weeks, Mike said Cool: “I hope you are well. But at one point, forgiveness is exhausted.”)

There is a moment in the second episode when Russ is considering the ridiculous situation in which he was made and said: “F -, it could be a film!” It looks like a preemptive defense against a criticism that many people make series in the streaming era, but it is valid in the case of “Chad Powers”.
Although the details are, of course, different – including the choice of sport – there are a lot of similarities with the first Apple + pierced blonde, “Ted Lasso”, including a beautiful blonde woman affirmed forty -something in a position of authority that accumulates with the coach (in this case, Tricia de Wynn Everett, the new influential head of the organization of boosters); Various rather stereotypical teammates whose confidence Chad / Russ must win; And an episode of “road” where the challenge is to sneak, have fun in town and return to the hotel before the curfew. It is also a comedy drama that was transferred from a character of sports cable Jokey: where the character of Ted Lasso made his promotions debut for the cover of NBC in 2013 of the Premier League, Powell and the co-creator of the Michael Waldron series (Rick & Morty “,” Heels “) imported Chad series from the EPSN series, the old series ELI, Giants “. Version of Chad Powers prostheses to pretend to be an overly old candidate for Walk-on for Penn State.
And, yes, it’s a story of redemption. This should not be a brake in the series, because almost each sports story is to a certain extent a story of redemption, whether it is a loser (or a losing team) trying to become winners, at the “Rocky” or “Remember the Titans”, or something deeper, like the star vehicle of McConaughey “We Are Marshall”, about university football program to rebuild a football program that was Wiped by an airplane.
The challenges here are quite minor in comparison, but although the series shows signs of realization of this, at the same time, it wants us to worry very, a lot of the transformation of Russ of a person who hates for a good reason for a person who richly deserves the love and the worship he receives. This means that it is a question of making pretending to be a better person can possibly make you one, if you simply stick – and yes, the series is also to the recognition of this aspect. This is quite aware that, often boring.
The most irritating aspect of the “powers of Chad” is not the too satisfied “transformation” of Powell into a title character, which is never quite credible because they have the same distinctive eye form; Nor is it the constant echoes of “Ted Lasso” and the many elements of the sports film that have been placed but not sufficiently redesigned. It is that there is a much more interesting program that takes place in the margins with Ricky and Jake Hudson, a dynamic father-daughter that we have not been shown in a television series before, at least not quite in this way.
The character of Ricky seems terribly subscribed at the beginning, but after three episodes, we start to realize that she is just injured and introverted and is played more subtly than most of the other characters. She wins in depth as season 1 goes to her final. I have known many women like Ricky, sports fans who find it difficult to accept in a sphere dominated by men, and I knew many fathers and girls with Ricky and Jake de Jake. Mattfield and Zahn are both superb, especially when they drop their guards and the strength of their deleted feelings grabs them by surprise.
I cared much more of the two that I did not make the beautiful young man gifted but incredibly unmanageable who had the world by the tail, let him go and designed a complicated deception to recover it.
Whole season projected for examination. Now on Hulu.
