“I’m a director. Writer. Producer. Actor. I did everything. So I just consider myself a storyteller.
It cannot be said that James Cotten ever shied away from hard work.
His refusal to limit himself to a single role within the film industry, although difficult at times, is a testament to his versatility and dedication to his craft.
And it worked pretty well.
James graduated from Los Angeles Film School in 2001 with a degree in cinema and pursued a career that extended into the film industry.
That’s why, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Los Angeles Film School, we’re also celebrating James’ raw talent, determination and industry success at our 5th Annual Spotlight Awards.
How did James manage to succeed in the film industry?
James never knew he wanted to make films. Her success came after a long journey of self-discovery. And this journey began as an actor.
James auditioned for a small role in Tuskegee Airmen, a film starring Laurence Fishburne and Andre Braugher. And he got the role! Only for them to cut it. That’s show business!
However, the positive side was that James ended up being an on-set extra for 30 days. This experience fueled his motivation and his desire to experience entertainment. One thing was certain: James had found his calling.
No longer just a small-town kid quoting Spielberg, James ventured to Oklahoma City for acting training and eventually made his way to Los Angeles, then London, then back to Los Angeles .
For his next step, James knew he needed more education. This is where the LA Film School comes in.
The connection with the LA Film School
James poured his heart and soul into his studies at LA Film School, devoting himself to learning day and night.
His thirst for knowledge and determination to master his craft was evident to everyone around him. It was here that he created his short film, Thunderbird.
His dedication has not gone unnoticed. His teachers were so impressed by his work that they presented Thunderbird during his graduation ceremony. This screening caught the attention of a notable personality: Roger Corman.
Three months later, James returned to Los Angeles to meet Roger and landed his first Hollywood directing contract: and so Demon Slayer was born.
The low-budget film directed by James and produced by Roger Corman – and involving many other talented LA Film School alumni – was released direct to DVD in 2003. And it’s also available on the SyFy channel to this day.
This opportunity marked great things. Following Demon SlayerJames continued to create other films such as Sugar Creek, Painted woman And The line – The line. He also produced major Hollywood hits like Captain Fantastic And Perfect pitch, and even had the pleasure of working alongside other LA Film School alumni including Phillip Bladh, Brandon Trost, Eric England, John M. Valerio and Tristan Thai.
James’ advice for budding creatives
James enjoys helping other creative minds succeed.
“That’s what excites me: getting as many people to invest and follow their path. And the circle is complete. This matters as much to me as it does to them.
Here are some of his tips for those just starting out:
“Don’t seek glory.”
True happiness comes from within and not from glory. Focus on what makes you happy and fulfilled rather than seeking external validation.
“Learn as much as you can about all facets of the business.”
Understand all aspects of the film industry. Knowledge is what allows you to communicate and work to the best of your abilities.
“You have to be willing to fail.”
Don’t be afraid of failure. Accept it, learn from it and move forward. Success often comes after overcoming significant challenges.
“Talent will take you far, but being a good human being is essential. »
Don’t get lost. People want to work with those they can trust and rely on.
