The Karlovy Film Festival Vary will project a newly restored version of “One Flue Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Miloš Forman, celebrating the 1975 masterpiece – the second of the three films to win every five main prizes of the Academy – on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the organizers of the festival for the 59th edition to come on Thursday.
Michael Douglas, one of the film producers and recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture, will personally present the restored version of the new Hollywood monument during a projection of a special gala, joined by his colleague producer Paul Zaentz, as well as the family members of Forman.
One of the most lasting authors to emerge from the new Czechoslovakian wave of the 1960s, Forman was a long -standing supporter of the Karlovy International Film Festival Vary and – as well as Douglas, Zaetz, and actor Danny Devito, who appeared in the contribution to the contribution outside the Cuckoo de Cuckoo.
“We are really honored to present” One flew over the nest of the cuckoo “to its 50th anniversary,” said Kviff executive director Kryštof Mucha in a statement. “The presence of Michael Douglas, Paul Zaentz and the Forman family will make an unforgettable moment in the history of the festival.”
Adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel, “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” focuses on the rebel Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a convicted man who feigns madness to escape a prison sentence. Reducting in a state psychiatric hospital, he finds himself locked up in a deeper battle for freedom against the dominating nurse Ratched (Anne Fletcher), who governs the neighborhood with an iron fist and applies his authority by all the necessary means.
A classic anti-establishment, the film has surmounted many pre-production obstacles to become one of the most profitable films of 1975. Douglas had only 31 at the time; His father, Kirk Douglas, had played McMurphy in the adaptation of Broadway game in 1963 and kept the rights to adapt Kesey’s book in a film for a decade, but could not find a studio willing to do so, finally passing the rights to his son. Douglas then met with Zaentz to co -produce.

Forman had been Kirk Douglas’ first choice to direct, but was previously prevented from doing so by the invasion of the Warsaw Pact of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union and the start of its formidable period of “normalization”, after which it was placed under strict surveillance. Successfully leak in the United States, he was then hired to lead by Douglas and Zaentz.
Roger Ebert – who saw the film during his world premiere at the 1975 Chicago Film Festival – practiced it with a few reservations, adding the film later to his list of “Great Films”. From Forman, which he described as “one of the great performers of American ways and manners,” wrote Ebert: “He sees his land adopted in terms of better non -conformist and external traditions, at a time when compliance is the new belief. His McMurphy succeeds and prevails as a character, despite the imperfections of the film, because he represents who cleanses the spirit which arrives now to renew the United States. ”
One of the oldest film festivals in the world, and the most prestigious of this type in Eastern and Central Europe, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) will hold its 59th edition from July 4 to 12 in the Czech Republic.
