The new version of Phil Johnston The idiots – the first in an animated series from the Roald Dahl Story Company, now owned by Netflix – is revolting. Seriously. If only that was a compliment. This should be the case. Dahl’s original was, after all, extremely turning. In the best possible way. Worry spaghetti, filthy beards, warts and frogs, all packed into ninety-five lively pages. Maybe turning isn’t the right word. Unwatchable. That will be enough.
To Dahl’s credit, Johnston’s film bears almost no resemblance The idiots who you grew up with. It’s a car crash gone wrong, entirely of its own design, narrative, and crude Americanization. Relocated to the fictional town of Triperot, the film retools Mrs. Twit (Margo Martindale) as a Midwestern dumpster, while bizarrely retaining Mr. Twit (Johnny Vegas) as an English Northerner, and offers a false plot expansion by offering them management of a rundown theme park. This is the immediately doomed Twitlandia, a dismal dump, fueled by the tears of Muggle-Wumps in reverse. There’s an orphanage nearby and two seriously disheartening orphans who will surely save the day.
Quickly boring with its own plot momentum – but not as quickly as the viewer – The idiots alts right towards lame satire. The attacks on Trumpist populism neither have the sharpness warranted by real-world horror – “I think it’s high time we made promises we don’t intend to keep” – nor seem relevant to the target audience. Promising to make Triperot the entertainment capital of the world, the Twits scam the stupid residents – all adults – and run for office.
In truth, malpropism is the least of The idiots” worries. Johnston’s screenplay, co-written with Meg Favreau, doesn’t elicit even a single laugh from start to finish. There’s a nauseating diarrhea that comes close but is killed by too much work. The boring songs – by David Byrne of the Talking Heads – die in woeful execution, while the message of empathy misses the mark. the essential. The animation is technically competent but artistically lousy. There’s just no making up for this bullshit.
