The Legend of Ochi – Review & Cocktail – GenMovi

It is now the moment when we should do our best to support originality in the film. Of course, we are all crying on the lack of new ideas in Hollywood, but when the time comes to speak with our wallets, it is the remakes and the big IPs that rat the most money at the end of the year. Real and real artistic talent is rarely recognized, but it happens. The summer of Barbeheimer was a fantastic example, and even now, Sinners is the follow -up to do much better than projected thanks to a huge word of mouth. I love to see it, and I wanted to keep the train on the march by consulting the latest fantastic film of A24, The legend of Ochhi. And by God, I should probably have gone to see the sinners again.

It is easy to find yourself in the original and fantastic aura of the film, and rightly so. Director Isaiah Saxon And the crew has designed a visually wonderful film that uses many old school techniques that simply cannot be beaten by the generation of computers. From puppet paintings, it had all the garnishes to deliver a fantastic fanciful film as I have not seen for a long time. Unfortunately, these visuals are simply not enough to save its narrative gaps. I was disappointed to find this dry, unbalanced and fully committed film for a good part of the execution. It really hurts me to say that because there was so much potential here to create a modern fantasy that is worth speaking for the years to come, but unfortunately, this fantasy is far from being fantastic.

Located in a mountainous island isolated from the Black Sea, we follow a young girl named Yuri, who becomes fascinated by the Ochi; Allegedly dangerous creatures that his father tries to hunt with his gang of young boys. But when Yuri comes into contact with an Ochi baby, she finds that these creatures are not what they seem and decide to go in a quest to bring the child back to his parents.

I want to focus as much as possible on the artistic talent of this film, because for all my problems with the film, it is always a wonder to see. Carpathian mountain chains are presented in saturated views that completely translate their scale into the film. Seeing Yuri crossing the open and empty ranges means that it looks like a good adventure in savagery which cannot be recreated convincingly by digital means. But there are also beautiful physical sets with such treatments and crafts, both stylized but legitimate. There is a cave towards the end of the film that shines with stalactites covered with dew which seem phenomenal. Even some of the history is made with expert matte expert paintings that bring Hollywood gold days back. I also really appreciate the color palette of the film, imitating the colors of the Ochi with orange shades and blue reflections.

Helena Zengel like Yuri

And let’s talk about these strange little monkeys because they are certainly the star of the series. If you thought it was something to do, well, it looks like a puppet with socks compared to what the team has done here. Thanks to a mixture of animatronics, costumes and complete puppets, the OCHI has received an undeniable feeling of realism. From complete body movements to minor facial movements, these are some of the most impressive examples of creations of physical creatures that I saw in a hot minute. Especially with the baby Ochi, which we can spend a lot of time looking at. It was apparently controlled by a total of seven people at a time to nail the subtle and soft movements of the creature; And I must say they really left the park. Yes, it may sometimes seem a little hokey, especially when the creature is supposed to move quickly, but it is too charming for me. Even with all the progress we have seen in motion capture and digital rendering, I think I always prefer when something is really there on the set, interacting with the actors. To tell the truth, that makes a world of difference.

Speaking of the actors, there is unfortunately not a ton to really write at home. It is not really a fault for them, because there is an obvious talent at work here, but the story and the direction of the film The sandals in underdeveloped or unexplored roles. The father / daughter relationship between Helena Zengel Yuri and Willem Dafoe’s Maxim lacks attention and appropriate details that make their possible rage to unravel, while the role of Finn Wolfhard Petro is wasting the potential of having a son adopted never really seen as a son in favor of a non -influential fundamental character. Ideas at the surface level to find as you do not belong to your own family have loose links with the frame, which begins to modernize with imports such as grocery and music of Heavy Metal. However, I never had the impression that the elements had an impact on history significantly. The anxiety of adolescents, the separation of parents and the understanding of our link with nature are all present, although they smell more like boxes checked rather than full parts in the story.

For a film that bursts on the seams of visuals and creative drawings, the narrative voice simply did not seem to the height. The dry and slowed dialogue and the deliveries sometimes give way to a few laughs, but I found it rather dull. It’s not like Wes Anderson The films, where the stoicism of the characters fuels the ridiculous of the story, rather, he has a little feeling of keeping the public through the arm, never leaving us to develop a real reason to worry about these characters. Dafoe’s The commitment raises its role a little, but everything else cannot really follow. This is also noticeable in rhythm, where the film is full of too many patients in more meditative scenes, while being far too steep and dispersed in higher moments of energy.

To tell the truth, I don’t know if This knew what he wanted to be. I think it’s far too slow for children, although fantastic visuals are certainly an attractive worm on a hook. He can succeed in giving the older public a hint of nostalgia through vintage artistic talent at work, but nothing on history will really excite them in the same way as the visuals. As I said, I am so disappointed to see that it is not the American American film, Ghibli-Esque studio that we probably all wanted, but there is still a lot to admire. I only hope that filmmakers will be able to see this as a learning experience and try again with this same know-how while putting a little more reflection to create a story that correctly serves the work of incredible effect. And A24, please Start reassessing what you put your money. I know you saw the Ochi and your first thought made a plush of $ 400 which, like 20 people, will buy.

EYES

Borrowing the names and palette of colors from nice creatures in the film, the Ochi is a bit of an ACI of Gin which uses a shiny and refreshing tangerine juice alongside botanical notes of the aforementioned gin and a pinch of Benedictine. While everything that is perfectly well in itself, I have Also decided to try to play with flavored foams to give the cocktail a little more uniqueness. This is where one of my new favorite cooking gadgets, ISI Nitro Whipper, comes into play. With him, I was able to do a creamy blueberry mousse to superimpose on top, not only to add a little more fruit flavor, but for Also Create a colorful superposition that would not generally be possible. I think it is possible to make this foam without whipping by simply shaking the ingredients in a shaker, but other tests will be necessary.
