And now, an Unloved that I saw come to fruition in real time, as the decision was made not to release MJ Bassett’s “Red Sonja” except as part of a one-night Fathom Event, as if the producers had decided, after spending the money (hundreds of thousands? millions?) to do so, to legitimize their tax deduction. Many people took this as a sign that the film wasn’t good enough for wide release, and even more didn’t seem to appreciate its energy at all.

I don’t follow many people. I am not more people. I’m the creator of The Unloved, and it filled my ’80s trash collector heart with joy, not to mention transcending its trappings.

Yes, this is exactly the film it appears to be on the poster; it’s smarter and more open-minded than its cinematic inspirations, and it’s a film of personal reflection and reinvention. It’s this director’s best work, for everything it shows the joy of becoming oneself. (Now available on VOD.)
