The Mal-Aimé is 12 years old today. To mark the occasion, I chose a film that I think the world has forgotten and that few people have ever seen: Vincent Ward’s “River Queen.”

It is one of the most beautiful works of painted cinema of the young century from a director who was almost the greatest director we have had. He was looking for a new state of being, a new type of film buried beneath the old. His ecstatic desire, his miserable past in search of a better present, his tireless emotionality: Vincent Ward’s cinema has remained forever engraved in my memory.
