Weapons – Review – GenMovi

Just like Long Last year, Weapons Can win the prize for the best viral marketing strategy for this year. But honestly, stellar marketing apart, as soon as I heard that Jordan Peele would have been so upset that his production studio lost the auction war for this film that he licensee Managers wanted to seal the agreement. Now, whether it is an exaggerated tabloid drama or not, it always made me ask me Exactly was the problem of weapons. He has a fairly simple premise; An entire classroom of children and leaving their houses one night at 2:17 am, leaving parents and teachers perplexed. There are so many things to explore beyond this premise that I worry a little that, too like LongHe can complete the weight of his own media threshing. But I am happy to point out that weapons are actually everything that and seven hot dogs.

Screenwriter and director Zach Creggerwho delivered the twisted hilarious Barbarous A few years ago, he found a way to go back up with a larger and daring horror film that takes all the subversive and creative elements that made Barbarian so fun and in the increased tenfold. It is still another film that is much more than it seems, breaking the mold of what you expect from modern horror thanks to a fun and energetic style of cinema which also remembers being a capital film M. I speak of interesting, anchored and realistic characters, an intelligent weaving story and a sometimes unexpected but effective sense of humor. However, he knows when to be tense, haunting and frightening in the visual and metaphorical sense. I saw a lot of people say that this film is not “on anything”, and that could not be further away from the truth. Is it always the most hermetic and clean metaphor? No, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing to withdraw from here. This is one of those films that I would really call a modern Horror film, and I can’t wait to talk about it with as many spoilers as possible.

Julia Garner like Justine Gandy

Let’s start with performance, mainly because it’s crazy to think about the difference in a film. Pedro Pascal, Renate Reinsve And Brian Tyree Henry were all attached, but due to Hollywood strikes in 2023, the film was to be almost completely rebuilt. I’m sure it would have always been a good film, but I am grateful that we saw the cast that we absolutely killed. Jennifer Garner Perhaps this is the strongest performance here, which is not new if you watched its two other films this year. She embodies Justine Gandy, the teacher of the missing class who becomes the target of a witch hunt when the authorities and the parents do not seem to find answers. She is phenomenal, really helping to expand a character who could have been very one or stereotypical, but ended up having a little edge. Her targeting for this mystery is not fully justified, but it is not a saint either. She has her own demons, which facilitates the finger at the point, which obtains both sympathy and even a little disdain of the public at the same time. Then there is Josh BrolinWho is refreshing to see in something without a budget of $ 200 million for a change. He plays one of the most vocal parents of this tragedy, looking for answers and, of course, to fight against the regret of what was or was not said before the disappearance of his son. Very emotional and very understandable why he seeks to find a culprit as soon as he can, in the hope of directing his pain in an anger that he probably knows will not realize him.

These two are the main stars, but I was completely blinded by some of these out -of -competition support performances. Honorable Alden Play a pathetic cop with a complicated romantic relationship with Justine, who ends up having a 48 -hour self -destructive hell. He has a moment when his emotions severely hinder the resolution of this mystery, and I think you would just be to draw comments on the officers acting on emotions rather than on this type of characterization. There is also a modified thief played by Austin Abramswhich is actually one of the few members of the original distribution to stay on the project. Quite simply the funniest performance in the film; Just a detestable guy who gets what comes to him because of his selfishness. Benoît WongWho plays the school director, is such a sweet and serious performance, but that’s not why you will remember. What this man does with his eyes in this is simply frightening. And finally, I must give it to Cary Christopher Who plays Alex, the A classroom that doesn’t disappear. Simply one of the best performances of children’s actors that I have seen in horror for a while, with one of the most intelligently written. There is A No more characters I would like to be able to talk about, but I will abstain so as not to spoil much. But as soon as you see them, you would say to yourself: “Yeah, this one is for the Sickos.”

Josh Brolin like Archer Graff

What really took me by surprise was the narrative structure of this film. Weapons is told in a fractured and non -linear way that constantly moves the prospects of one character to another, recalling very Magnolia. It is a ton of pleasure, controlling the publication of information which can also add clarity to the elements of the previous scenes. He also uses it in a very similar way to Barbarian, completely overwhelming the story to throw you for a loop in a way that subverts you but always makes sense. It seems that the film is much longer than it is, because we continually see the same day through different eyes, but he had never had the impression of dragging. It is partly thanks to the absolute mastery of cinema and the narration that takes place here. There are a ton of intelligent and creative camera uses, especially in many intense race and driving scenes. Frantic Isn’t that the right word, but there is always a notable energy behind it and it really has the impression of being used as a tool to tell the story rather than showing it. And many of these high intensity scenes are crowned with absolutely brutal demonstrations of violence that will absolutely satisfy some of you. But when it is time to slow down things, there is a large amount of tense rhythm that manages to bother you thanks to pure involvement. All these scenes have an excellent gain, never feeling really cheap by managing to telegraph the inevitable. There is a large nightmare sequence with Broline The character that continues to repeat the same photo you know will simply change at some point, but it just eats away until then. And, as most of us would probably do, Broline Wake up in a sweat with a strong “What The Fuck?”.

Just like BarbarousThis thing is surprisingly super funny, but not at a point where you could call it a horror comedy. In truth, he uses the comedy to found the characters and make them more relatable, or in some cases, apply a moment of lightness when things were heavy enough. In one way or another, the film avoids the tone rabbit blow, mainly because it becomes obvious that it aims to be a film pleasant to the crowd unlike the highest horror films which just want you to soak up with despair. Because of this, the atmosphere from which I draw was a bit of a mixture of Sam Raimi And even Steven Spielbergmanaged to balance humor and grotesque with mobile and layer characters that bring home reality what’s going on.

Austin Abrams like James

So what does all this mean? What is the greatest metaphor behind all this, because each modern horror film acclaimed by criticism needs it, right? It is very obvious that the event of the disappearance of the child is supposed to be very parallel to the tragedy of school fire. I mean, at some point, it literally beats you above your head with the notion. An entire classroom has disappeared and everyone wonders why. An insane act needs Having someone responsible, but it is not good enough. How did we get to this point? For what Have we come to this point? These are some of the questions that are asked, and unfortunately, there is not always a universally good answer. And this is where the deeper meaning of the film can become a little vague. There are a few different directions that you can go, but I don’t think Crust Subscribe exactly to a singular point. Perhaps the response is the parents’ answer, who could have caught signs of this tragedy if they were just a little more involved. Or maybe it’s something out of their control; Something in the outside world that will influence their children without telling them. But the film is not trying to give a final answer, but rather, it tries to examine the consequences; emotions, pain and for me, the meaning behind the title Weapons.

The film gives you a very literal answer to that, and you would be right to leave it there and call it one day. But for me, I think you can also consider the act itself as the weapon. Tragedy has always and will always be used to make a statement on something. Control of firearms, video games, societal culture as a whole; All these elements will be indicated in order to push a kind of belief or story. The tragedy is armed if we know that we do it or not, and often, it can be wrong, a bit like the anger of a parent to seek justice. I don’t know if any It was Cregger Intention, but I think it is one of those films that captures a modern suburban horror that goes beyond the simple psychological torment of Mundanity. But even if I just take a sense of my ass, it’s always a very entertaining and effective horror film. Sometimes it may seem that that’s all he tries to be, which can actually work to make it less alienating for those who are not a fan of the most modern horror styles. Perhaps it is not as completed as it could have been, and perhaps the end is a case of you, to love it so that its pleasant crowd to conclude or to hate it to go against the ideas he had put in place, but I strongly implore you to see this despite everything. Crust has cemented as a modern force that can be among people like Stink And TutoringAnd I can’t wait to see what he is still doing. Even If it is a resident Evil movie. The 7th time is the charm, I suppose?
